Pledging

What is pledging?

Pledging is where the young women we have invited into the four week pledging process learn what it means to be a sister of Alpha Sigma. We teach this through classes, individual and group projects, community service projects, mentoring, and encouragement. We care a great deal about our pledges, since they will hopefully become sisters and be the future for our sisterhood.

What about classes and hazing?

We have a high regard for education and we always place academics first. There are mandatory study hours. We would expect that if any pledge had a large project or assignment, that they would let us know so we can work with them so that they can be successful. We don't haze. Why? Because, it makes no sense to haze someone one day, and then call them your sister the next. Hazing leads to bad feelings and resentment, which is the opposite of what we want. We want all our sisters to love and respect each other. We feel that hazing is not useful to the betterment of our sorority. So we work very hard to make sure that our pledges feel safe. We regularly remind pledges to let us know if something makes them uncomfortable, and give them the opportunity to discuss it with either the sisters or advisor, without any repercussions.

What about parties and alcohol?

We like to have fun just like everybody else. We have mixers with other houses, and go out on the weekends to have fun. However, Rush events and pledging are completely dry. This is for everyone's safety. It is far too easy for things to get out of hand when there is drinking involved. So we follow the college's guidelines and do not allow any alcohol at Rush events or during the four weeks of pledging.

What do I have to do to be eligible to pledge?

  • Alpha Sigma requires a minimum 2.2 GPA in order to pledge.

  • First semester freshman are not allowed to pledge (The only exceptions are transfer students)

  • You MUST attend the college mandated New Pledging Orientation.
